The Quiet Death of Workplace Acknowledgment

Pride Month, birthdays, farewells, basic empathy: what gets lost when we skip collective recognition

The Quiet Death of Workplace Acknowledgment

At Dulles airport a few weeks ago, I locked eyes with a TSA agent who appeared to be trans. My stomach dropped. I wondered what their life must be like right now in this country, in this era, in this federal workforce.

And yet—there they were, in uniform, doing the job, showing up. Are our leaders doing the same?

World Pride took place right here in Washington, D.C.and federal agencies are acting like Pride Month doesn’t exist. When something is clearly happening—Pride Month, hard transitions, workplace farewells—and leaders say nothing, it sends a message: your experience doesn’t count.
